from the pulpit of motherbumper

Today I'm over at MBT - BlogHers ACT Canada specifically - talking about trying to do Buy Nothing Day today.

BND is a a 24 hour moratorium on consumer spending led by my favorite magazie AdBusters.

I've tried for the past few years to spend this entire day (a normal, non-house bound day) not buying anything. Yesterday I successfully bought nothing but I'm going to try for two in a row.

Unfortunately we are out of bananas and I hear the siren call of coffee. Today is going to be extra hard. Bananas are a lifeline of sorts. So is coffee.

What would you find hardest to not buy? I'm betting it involves caffeine ... am I right?

I'll be updating this post later today to tell you how I'm doing.

Meanwhile I will be reading about the amazing sales I'm missing down south - good thing those across the border and I have no car. I'll try to ignore the fact that Canadian retailers are trying to compete today by having wicked sales. Their efforts to keep the shoppers in the country during our stronger than the US dollar days - while a great idea - is making non-consuming life difficult.

what you talkin' bout willis? no timbits?
someone call my union rep - this is SO WRONG

I'm doing it for you Little Lady - it's all for you

I was thinking about posting about this today, too, but it is totally trumped by my other celebrations today.

Still, I needed coffee this morning, and will need lunch to keep going, but other than that, no consumer goodies for me today.

I suck. The sale at Blend Creations sucked me in.

Trillian and I went out to lunch--a rare day when we both had free time and would be in the same place. Oops.

Ooh, unfortunately the call for formula is too strong.

I think the buy nothing day should be only for bigger ticket items and Christmas shopping. The staples, like coffee, shouldn't be considered. You NEED coffee, for the love of Pete.

Good luck to you. I gave up my buynothingday-ginity this morning at 6am. I hadn't a chance. LOL.

Socks, coffee, homemade cookies from a bake sale and Strongbow. I couldn't resist. I'm drinking the apple goodness right now.

I haven't bought a thing but that's because I can't be bothered to fight with crowds rather than anything more cerebral.
Well done you

We bought a pizza today (nobody felt well enough to cook). But other than that, no purchases!

What if the Timbit was a day-old? Is that a loophole?

I did not buy a single thing today! So proud of myself. I needed milk, coffee, soda. But, did not give in. It can wait till I get off work saturday night.

I resisted the pull of Timmy's on the way to a friend's house for a playdate and made her make me coffee instead. 'Cause I'm bossy like that. Otherwise I did not buy a single thing.

Single tear for Janet.

A day that I don't buy a coffee?? That's a bad day indeed. I'm sorry. Otherwise I could easily fulfill the criteria.
